First International Angiogenesis Workshop Explores New Research Models In April 2002, Nicanor Moldovan, PhD, assistant professor of Internal Medicine and Biomedical Engineering, initiated and organized "Novel Angiogenic Mechanisms," the first international workshop hosted by the Dorothy M. Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute to focus on new approaches for the study and understanding of basic angiogenic mechanisms. Seven European and three U.S. investigators participated, offering fresh data and concepts. While many meetings have addressed angiogenisis research at large, this is thought to be the first to focus entirely on addressing the difficulties of the "sprouting model" to account for all real-life situations, particularly pathological conditions in adult animals and humans. Existing anti-angiogenic therapies have shown modest, but controversial benefits. Conversely, pro-angiogenic growth factors have produced disappointingly small effects. The event was made possible with strategic and financial support from the DHLRI and the Department of Internal Medicine. The proceedings were published as part of a book series, Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology. Click here to read the publisher's description. Click here to order the book.
