Hagop S. Mekhjian, MD, holds a number of appointments with The Ohio State University Medical Center, Columbus, Ohio. These include:

- Chief Medical Officer, The Ohio State University Health System
- Associate Vice President for Health Sciences, The Ohio State University
- Professor, Internal Medicine, The Ohio State University College of Medicine

Dr. Mekhjian’s expertise and leadership is focused in many areas to include an emphasis in clinical outcomes and the use of technology in improving health outcomes. In 1999, he established the Leadership Council for Clinical Value Enhancement (LCCVE). The LCCVE is comprised of physician leadership focused on improving clinical outcomes throughout the organization. This includes a broad range of activities ranging everything from access to care, reduction in practice variation, efficiency of care, and communication, as well as issues related to patient safety and throughput.

Likewise, assuring that technology is a key element in quality and efficiency, Dr. Mekhjian has led many initiatives in positioning The Ohio State University Medical Center as a leader in this arena. These efforts have been recognized nationally to include:

- The Nicholas E. Davies Award from CPRI-Host, a nonprofit organization established by the Institute of Meddicine, recognition of its role as a national leader for implementation of computer-based patient record keeping systems. Medical Director, The Ohio State University Hospital.

- Consistently listed on the "100 Most Wired" list compiled by Hospitals & Health Networks, the journal of the American Hospital Association; also recipient of "Most Wired Innovator Award (2002).

- Recognized as a benchmark organization by The Leapfrog Group – a coalition of 150 public and private organizations dedicated to improving patient safety for the Medical Center’s use of technology to enhance patient safety.

Since 1969, Dr. Mekhjian has participated in numerous conferences, lectureships, and grand rounds and has held leadership roles in many committees and task forces. His society memberships include the American Gastroenterological Association; Fellow, American College of Physicians; Fellow, American College of Gastroenterology; American College of Physician Executives; American Medical Association; and Alpha Omega Alpha.

Dr. Mekhjian has been the recipient of over 13 research grant awards on which he was the Principal Investigator, and has authored over 90 peer-reviewed papers and articles, and given over 39 abstracts and presentations at national meetings. He also served as the Chairman of the Biomedical Sciences Human Subjects Review Committee at The Ohio State University from 1979-1984; Steering Committee, National Cooperative Gallstone Study from 1977-1983; Steering Committee, National Cooperative Crohn’s Disease Study from 1972-1984. Dr. Mekhjian has been listed in The Best Doctors in America since 1998.

Dr. Hagop S. Mekhjian received his medical degree from the American University of Beirut in 1962. He completed a residency in gastroenterology at the Lahey Clinic in Boston, Massachusetts, was a clinical fellow in GI at the Cincinnati General Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio and was a research assistant in GI at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
