Research Excellence

The Division of Immunology and Rheumatology continues to make advancements in its research activities, while at the same time serving the University and the community. The Division’s scholarly publications and peer reviewed grants also continue to demonstrate considerable strength with two new awards from the National Cancer Institute and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as well as extramural research funded by other national agencies. Consider some of our faculty's most recent activities:

  • Drs. Kevin Hackshaw and Clark Anderson are co-investigators on Program Projects. Dr. Anderson carries on with new developments in his NIH-funded studies of Fc receptors, and has just completed four years of service as a Section Editor of the prestigious The Journal of Immunology.

  • Drs. Hackshaw and Ronald L. Whisler, division director, serve as principal investigators with Dr. Rebecca Jackson on the NIH-funded Osteoarthritis Initiative. Drs. Hackshaw and Whisler also serve as reviewers for Study Sections on Geriatrics/Rehabilitation Medicine and Fibromyalgia/ Musculoskeletal Pain. Dr. Hackshaw was an invited participant at the National Fibromyalgia Program Assessment sponsored by the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, NIH.

  • At the national level, four faculty members are presently peer reviewers for NIH and either serve on editorial boards or are reviewers for peer-reviewed scientific publications. Several members of the division have been active in conducting clinical investigations into more efficacious treatment regimens for osteoporosis arthritis, systemic lupus erythematous and osteoarthritis. Drs. Hackshaw and Seth Kantor are heading up or are active participants in these ongoing programs. Submission of research proposals by the division was also strong, which will facilitate additional collaborative efforts.
