The Division of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Internal Medicine is committed to comprehensive patient care, high caliber research and innovative medical education for medical students, post-doctoral trainees and professional colleagues. The Division's three-part mission is enhanced through developing collaborations with the Departments of Pathology and Molecular Virology, Immunology and Medical Genetics; the Dorothy M. Davis Heart & Lung Research Institute; the College of Biological Sciences; the College of Veterinary Medicine; the School of Public Health; the Columbus Health Department; the Ohio Department of Health and Columbus Children's Hospital.

Patient Care.

Each year physicians, fellows and staff in the Division care for patients with a wide range of serious and life-threatening infections, such as pneumonia, meningitis, encephalitis, and HIV/AIDS.

Education.

The Division offers an innovative clinical inpatient and outpatient training and research environment for medical students, residents and Infectious Diseases fellows.

Research.

Division faculty are funded for major clinical studies, including HIV/AIDS, community-acquired pneumonia and other bacterial, fungal and viral infections, as well as microbial pathogenesis and is spearheading a major collaborative effort in pathogenesis through its newly established Center for Microbial Interface Biology.Clinical facilities include The Ohio State University Medical Center, with 923 licensed beds, including the University Hospitals with its full-service medical Clinic Microbiology and Immunology laboratories and a Clinical Epidemiology Program, the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Research Institute, OSU East, and the Richard M. Ross Heart Hospital. Outpatient care is provided in the Infectious Diseases Clinic, a full-time clinic with dedicated staff. Research facilities include a broad mix of laboratory facilities, including BSL-III laboratories for hazardous specimens.
