Narcolepsy usually doesn't show itself until patients are in their 20s - though six percent are under the age of 10 - and often goes undiagnosed for another 10 years. "Initially, we underestimated how common narcolepsy is," says Dr. Rami Khayat, who specializes in treating narcolepsy in the Sleep Disorders Center at Ohio State University. "The more we came to understand it, the more overlooked that we realized it is."
