Today is a very exciting time for pulmonary, allergy, critical care and sleep specialists. Opportunities to translate knowledge into diagnostic and therapeutic advancements in critical care, sleep medicine, transplantation, asthma, interstitial lung disease, emphysema and other respiratory diseases create a dynamic environment in which to practice, teach and conduct research.
The Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine aims to have an impact by: Creating, disseminating and applying knowledge to improve the lives of patients with pulmonary, critical care, sleep or allergic disease.
Among the Division's efforts are clinical trials being conducted in critical care, asthma, emphysema, acute respiratory distress syndrome, HIV-associated lung disease and pulmonary therapeutics. Basic research efforts include exploration in cell signaling, cell survival and apoptosis, respiratory muscle physiology, pathogenesis of Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome and the regulation of inflammation in the lung, to name a few. We focus on knowledge creation (research), knowledge dissemination (education) and knowledge application (clinical medicine). Our goal is to train the leaders of tomorrow through mentorship for fellows and young faculty. To assist this training, we have an NIH training grant to study the molecular mechanisms of lung inflammation.
As members of the Dorothy M. Davis Heart & Lung Research Institute our collaboration with the Cardiovascular Medicine, Surgery, and other disciplines has resulted in collaborative academic programs in sleep medicine and vascular biology and heart failure; in lung transplantation; in asthma; in IPF and in emphysema.
We have 17 physicians recognized by Best Doctors in America®, and our group was ranked 41 on the US News and World Report Best Hospitals list of respiratory medicine programs in 2007.
Want to be a part of this dynamic environment? If you are a patient, I hope you seek medical care in our healthcare facilities. If you are seeking an innovative and collaborative fellowship program, I invite you to explore these pages and learn all that we have to offer.

Sincerely,

Clay B. Marsh, MD
Director, Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine
