New Drug Chantix Showing Promise in Helping Hard-Core Smokers Kick the Habit
Columbus Dispatch 4/15/07
After burning a pack a day for 30 years, Judi Gallik of Canal Winchester drew her last drag on Jan. 29. "I don't even think about smoking," she said. Gallik credits her success to Chantix (SHAN-tix), a new medication that decreases the desire for cigarettes. The first prescription medicine for nicotine addiction -- Chantix, the brand name for the compound varenicline -- has been marketed for six months. Some central Ohio doctors and patients see promise in its use, although many smokers who try it won't find success. "I've had more patients quit on this drug than any other cessation method," Westerville internist Jacqueline Amico said. Dr. Jim Allen, a lung specialist at the Ohio State University Medical Center, has prescribed the drug for about 60 patients and had a success rate of 25 percent to 30 percent. "I was hoping it would be more like 50 percent," he said, "but I have a hard-core group of smokers who are less likely to quit. I still think it is probably the best thing out there."
