Biographical Narrative

Dr. Wewers trained in pulmonary medicine under the direction of Dr. Roger C. Bone at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and then completed a 5 year research experience in the Pulmonary Branch of the National Institutes of Health under the guidance of Dr. Ronald G. Crystal. He was recruited to the faculty of the Ohio State University in 1986 where he has been continously supported by extramural funds from the NIH for his work on lung innate immune function since 1989. In 1996 he was named Division Director of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Ohio State University and Deputy Director of the Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute in 1997 where he served as interim director from 2000-2002. In 2000 he was bestowed the honor of the John A. Prior Professorship. Dr. Wewers has been a frequent external reviewer for the NIH and served as a permanent member of the Lung Biology and Pathology A study section from 1996-2000. He currently serves as Associate Director of the Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute where he is active in graduate programs and directs an NIH T32 training program on the molecular mechanisms of lung inflammation.
